Delest is a desktop app and a command for macOS, Windows and Linux, developed by Othman Kaabaoui. It finds what rebuilds itself on a developer's machine (builds, dependencies, caches) and frees the space with their consent. This page explains what happens to your data.
In short
- Delest collects no data and shares none.
- There is no account, no advertising and no analytics.
- What Delest learns about your machine stays on your machine.
What Delest reads, and where it keeps it
To decide, Delest reads the names of folders and files, their size and modification date, the git state of projects
(what is tracked or ignored) and the presence of manifests and lockfiles (Cargo.toml,
package-lock.json…). It keeps in its data folder, on your machine, the index of the last scan, the journal of
what it did, the list of quarantined items, your decisions and your settings. That folder is
~/Library/Application Support/delest on macOS, ~/.local/share/delest on Linux and
%LOCALAPPDATA%\delest on Windows.
What goes over the network
- Whether the network is there. Before proposing a folder that only rebuilds online (npm dependencies,
for instance), Delest tries a connection to
registry.npmjs.org, sending nothing. - New versions. At most once a day, the app asks GitHub (
api.github.com) for Delest's latest published version, sending nothing but the request; as with any visit, GitHub sees your IP address. When a newer version exists, the app says so and offers the download page; it installs nothing by itself. Turn it off in Settings › New versions. - The AI models. They are downloaded from Hugging Face, only when you ask for it
(
delest models). - The local model. It runs on your machine and listens on the local address
127.0.0.1only; your questions and its answers do not leave your machine. - “Ask the agent”. Only when you click this button, Delest puts your question to your agent (Claude Code) with the folder's path, the names of what it holds and the facts Delest established, never the files' contents. The agent handles that request under its own terms, its publisher's. The button can be turned off in the Settings.
Agents and Vario
If you install its hook in your AI agents, Delest adds a line to their configuration file (keeping a copy of it) and checks the disk at the start of each session. If Vario is installed, Delest reads its local state to spare your agent's quota. If it finds Handoff, it reads your projects' activity dates locally.
Erasing your data
delest remove takes Delest out of your agents; deleting its data folder erases everything it kept. On
Windows, uninstalling also removes the timer and the agents' hooks.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page, with its effective date.
